What is WordPress?

Jared Lutz December 17, 2020

At its core, WordPress is the simplest, most popular way to create your own website or blog. In fact, WordPress powers over 38.8% of all the websites on the Internet. Yes – more than one in four websites that you visit are likely powered by WordPress.

On a slightly more technical level, WordPress is an open-source content management system (CMS) licensed under GPLv2, which means that anyone can use or modify the WordPress software for free. A content management is basically a tool that makes it easy to manage important aspects of your website – like content – without needing to know anything about programming.

The end result is that WordPress makes building a website accessible to anyone – even people who aren’t developers.

What Kind of Website Can WordPress Make?

Anything you can dream of. In fact, purposefully, our entire network is built on WordPress.

What’s the difference between WordPress and Wix, squarespace or any of those other build-it-yourself platforms?

Well, first off, we are a tax-exempt 501c3 nonprofit. Secondly, Wix, Squarespace, weebly, etc are built on their own specific framework, which are not open-source. This means scaling, or growing your business, can be difficult with them. Once you are on their platform, getting off can be very difficult and you will be required to rebuild you website to some degree if you ever want to host with another company.

With WordPress and on our platform, you can virtually host with anyone you want. We do not, and WordPress does not demand anything from you, we give you the freedom to grow the way you need and the way you want.
